The long appeals process has finally led to a new trial for Adnan Syed.
The subject of the water cooler first season of the Serial podcast was previously sentenced to life after being convicted of murdering his high school girlfriend in 1999.
But on Thursday Baltimore Circuit Judge Martin Welch ruled Syed deserved a retrial due to his ineffective attorney.

Specifically, His Honor sited Christina Gutierrez‘s failure to cross-examine a cell phone expert whose testimony place Syed at the scene of the crime and to call potential alibi witness Asia McClain.
No new trial date has been set yet, but we imagine Sarah Koenig will be all over the trial for a new season of Serial.
