13 Reasons Why is Netflix‘s newest hit — but also maybe its most controversial ever.

The story of a teenage girl’s suicide has been alternately praised for its unflinching look at the very real factors that lead teens to self harm AND blasted for glorifying suicidal behavior.

Canadian schools have warned parents of its graphic content and banned teachers from discussing it with their students. Paris Jackson called the show “extremely triggering.”

So what does exec producer Selena Gomez think of all this controversy? It’s pretty much what she was going for. She told the AP:

“We stayed very true to the book and that’s initially what Jay Asher created, was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story, and I think that’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, that’s going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing. I’m overwhelmed. I’m very proud of it.”

Whatever your reaction to the show, it is getting a lot more people to talk about the problem of teen suicide.
