Soon after Trevor Noah was announced to replace Jon Stewart as the new Daily Show host, old twitter comments written by the comedian had surfaced.

Some tweets caused a wave of controversy due to their sexist and anti-semitic nature. And now, Comedy Central has spoken out on the comedian’s behalf.

A network spokesperson had this to say about the controversial tweets:

“Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”

After the impending host received the criticism, he took to, what else — Twitter, alluding to the situation. The (now deleted) tweet read:

“Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter.”

Ain’t it the truth, Trev!

The 31-year-old joined The Daily Show as a correspondent in December. Even though he has only appeared in a handful of sketches, Comedy Central is very confident in their choice to fill the gap left by veteran Stewart.

If anything, this shows that the new host will have no problem pushing the envelope, just like his predecessor!
