In his new memoir Nevertheless, out April 4, Alec Baldwin reveals something he’s stayed private about for 30 years: he once overdosed on drugs while in his twenties.

Speaking to GMA‘s George Stephanopoulos on Friday, the 30 Rock star opened up about the day he got sober — February 23, 1985 — and the battle with drugs and alcohol leading up to that day:
“I’m glad I got it when I did ’cause not many people get sober when they’re young. I got sober when I was just about to turn 27. And those two years that I lived in that white hot period, as a daily drug abuser, as a daily drinker… to my misery, boy, that was a tough time. There was really, really a lot of pain in there.”
